A corner in time’: My Erasmus Journey to Foggia“ by Dafne Vidanec, college prof.

asked a friend of mine who likes to travel: What does Italy mean to you? – And he simply replied: “I don’t know, perhaps the art of ‘that time’.

My experience in the land whose identity is world-widely marked by three-colored line: the Italian flag. (source: https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zastava_Italije#/media/Datoteka:Flag_of_Italy.svg).

Italian flag is the brand. It refers to everything made in Italy: food, fashion, vehicles Roman Holidays(1953.) withG. Peck and A. Hepburn likewise. Film, music, sport (…). There is no destiny which happened in Italy that can be replaced with another one! Historical one of the death of Caesar (47 B. C.) literally mummified thanks to William Shakespeare: the tragedy of Iulisu Caesar.

  • The trade market motto of “bella Italia”!
  • The eagerness for teaching the Italians the principles of Business Ethics turned into life adventure.

The 48 h. Rails Strike

Kärntnernland Spaar Caffe in Globasitz.

The almost very end of cold November in Zagreb. And I am just about to leave Zagreb main train station in order to reach Austrian Villach Haupt Bahnhoff where I should make a train transfer to the train to Italy, a bit after midnight. Destination:  Roma Termini 10:00 AM. Planning and, at the same time hoping that my ‘leg will step on the Italian soil’ according to time schedule, in the manner of Gloria Gaynor’s famous verse I was “so exciting” coming to Foggia. But! The ‘hot’ news! The ÕBB went into 24 hours strike. It forced me to spend another 48 hours in Kärntnernland.

Finally, I have reached Foggia in late afternoon on 29th of November.

The Park of the Princes and ‘meet the family’ story

Parco dei principi Hotel restaurant.

Parco dei Principi was 4,5 km away from the city center my hotel destination. Close to Foggia airport named after Italian aviator, the Hotel the glasses, mirrors, and classics; ‘sweet breakfasts (…) while eating watching the winter edition of the Hotel ‘wedding’ fountain(s) surrounded with the palm trees (…) Unusual, but hosting place ren by a good staff and led by Hotel manager Domenico, who introduced me with his father Giulio with the words: “Daphne e la nostra clienta!” And, of course, I met the rest of the Hotel crew, too, not surprisingly when you spent the most of the mornings and evenings – in the hotel. Simple custom: meet entire family!

Business ethics: Mediterranean Enigma?

Oleksandra, Anna and Victoria – Ukraineans, Francesca and Federica – the two Italians and Croatian – i. e. me found ourselves discussing about peculiarities of our countries, cultures; men – “guys” – to cite Victoria, and women (…), too.

Victoria, Federica, Franceska, Oleksandra, Anna and me (counter-clockwise).

Because of the language barrier from the Mediterranean side along came, I was “entertaining” my Ukraine and Italian colleagues few hours with my story of Croatia, of students and of the role of my course – of Business Ethics within Croatian educational and higher institutional system.

In the region of Puglia, and perhaps we might apply the insight to the whole character of the area is that Business Ethics is still enigma there, and what gives me to think that such “a look” is a consequence of multileveled political, cultural, social, economic transformation that Italy was passing through since 753. B. C. What characterize this society is “Mediterranean moral”.  Italians are just in love with their territory, so much that the very concept is integrated into the name of the University department.

Story of DAFNE

Italian study of Economics in the region of Puglia is based more on the productive level. Their students at the Department of the Economy are engaged more with MathComputer SciencesLogic and UnderstandingProject Development and other practical disciplines.

I also have visited the Department of the Law and the Department of Economy, Management and Territory, which is among their students and professors known after acronime DEMET.

DAFNE is their acronym for the Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie, Alimenti, Risorse Naturali e Ingegneria of the University of Foggia.

Woman who conquered University

During my stay in Foggia, I took a part in the sight-seeing the University campus (…) in the very center – Via Alberto da Zara (…) And visiting the University headquarters in Via Antonio Gramschi No 89-91. Beautiful building few kilometers away from the city center. Everyone who visits Foggia cannot forget this architectural edition because its spacy entrance hall has been conquered by ingenious hand of the artist who sculptured astonishing statue of the Roman goddess Minerva (in Greek: Athena – the goddess of wisdom and war, a. n.). So, woman dominates the building! And on the geo-map, as well.

Versace pret-a-porter

Geographically depicted country borders on the map which reminds on the woman high hilled boot makes impression that Italy is real “pret-a-porter” in the manner of famous Gianni Versace models of nineties of 20th c. Calabria is Gianni’s homeland.

I used to listen to Italian synth-pop group called Matia Bazar, very often (…). And the The Souvenire song still echoes in my ears. I like the part of that song that says that “the love is a moment in time; a corner of time” (originally: Chanson d’amour/Un attimo di tempo/Un angolo nel tempo).

The end.
