The University of Applied Sciences Baltazar Zaprešić was named after Baltazar Adam Krčelić, a famous Croatian historian, literary historian, theologian and lawyer, born in Šenkovac, a place near Zaprešić in 1715.
Baltazar was extremely gifted, he was educated in Zagreb, Vienna and Bologna, and after he became a doctor of philosophy and theology, he performed various duties. Among others, he was a Zagreb canon and rector of the Croatian College in Vienna.
With his ideas and open criticism, this great clergyman and intellectual vigorously advocated for reforms in all areas of education, economy and administrative organization, with a special emphasis on the education of youth in a reformist spirit.
Baltazar is the author of many works, and one of his books, Historiarum cathedralis ecclesiae Zagrabiensis partis primae tomus primus is kept by our University.
Just before his death, Baltazar donated his private library to the Royal Academy of Sciences, thus becoming one of the founders of the University and National Library in Zagreb.
