Outbound student mobility

University of Applied Sciences Baltazar Zapresic

Outbound student mobility

Outgoing student mobility can be achieved for the purpose of a study stay, which involves attending courses and taking exams or conducting research under the supervision of a tutor at a foreign host institution. After the mobility, the student returns to the Baltazar Polytechnic where he/she continues and completes the studies he/she has started.

About outgoing student mobility

The purpose of outgoing student mobility can also be to carry out a professional internship at a foreign host institution. In most cases, students complete a professional internship funded through the Erasmus+ program.

Regardless of the purpose of mobility, if the student has fulfilled their previously agreed obligations, upon return, the achieved grades and ECTS points are recognized, the semester is verified, and the student continues to study at the Baltazar Polytechnic. The procedures that the student must follow during mobility, as well as the mobility recognition process, are explained in detail in the Regulations on International Mobility.

On the website of the International Relations Office, you can find most of the information related to mobility for the purpose of study stays, professional internships, current competitions, read about previous student experiences, as well as answers to frequently asked questions.

A) Study stay

The study stay takes place within the framework of a full-time undergraduate or graduate study abroad at a partner higher education institution, including the preparation of a final thesis. The study period abroad must be part of the student's study program leading to a qualification in any cycle of studies. The study period abroad may also include a period of professional practice (internship). Such a combination creates synergies between academic and professional experience abroad. The combination is in accordance with the funding rules and the minimum duration of mobility for the purpose of the study stay.

B) Student internship

Professional practice (internship, apprenticeship) is carried out abroad in a company, organization or any other relevant place of work. Professional practice (internship) abroad is supported during studies in any cycle of studies and for people who have recently graduated. Professional practice takes place full-time (at least 6 hours a day) provided that the home higher education institution recognizes it as part of the study program. If this is not possible, professional practice is recorded in the Supplementary Statement of Studies. Students can complete professional practice within one year of completing their studies (graduation), but they apply for the competition while they have student status. In that case, upon completion of the practice, it is not recorded in the Supplementary Statement of Studies.

C) Blended mobility

Any period of study or professional placement abroad of any duration can take the form of blended mobility. Blended mobility is a combination of physical mobility and a virtual component, facilitating collaborative learning and teamwork via the internet. For example, the virtual component can bring together students from different countries and fields of study via the internet to follow an online programme or work together and simultaneously on tasks that are recognised as part of their studies. In addition, students (in short professional studies or undergraduate or graduate studies) who cannot participate in long-term physical mobility for the purpose of study or professional placement, for example because of their field of study or because they have fewer opportunities to participate, will be able to undertake short-term physical mobility by combining it with a mandatory virtual component.

Duration of mobility
  • study stay: 2 to 12 months (standard physical mobility)
  • professional internship: 2 to 12 months (standard physical mobility)
  • blended / combined mobility: 5-30 days of physical mobility + mandatory virtual mobility

1) Conclusion of a Learning Agreement (when going on a study stay and when going on a professional internship)
LEARNING AGREEMENT FOR STUDY STAY

IMPORTANT: Guidelines for students – minimum number of ECTS credits earned during mobility – 15 credits per semester

Before leaving for a foreign institution, the student is obliged to compare the study programs at the home and foreign institutions with their Erasmus coordinator and select compatible courses to attend/take. The selected courses/title of the final thesis are entered in the LA with the corresponding number of ECTS credits.

The LA is signed by the responsible person (head of the study programme) at the home institution, in addition to the student. The home institution, with its signature, guarantees the recognition of ECTS credits/results achieved during the mobility.

The student and his/her coordinator also agree on which courses/modules the student will not have to retake at their home institution after successfully completing their studies abroad (recognition sheet)

The European Commission requires that from the academic year 2022/23, the Online Learning Agreement database be used to generate/sign digital LAs. Follow the instructions received from the foreign institution regarding the creation/signing of the LA. In the LA form, under contact person/responsible person at sending institution, list the faculty coordinators, not the employees of the Center for International Mobility/Erasmus, since the Center does not have the authority to sign Learning Agreements! European Commission instructions for online learning agreements.

Any change/supplement to the LA is possible if there are objective reasons for it, and within one month of the student's arrival at the foreign higher education institution. All changes are agreed upon between all three parties and entered into the LA.

The student is obliged to submit a copy of the Learning Agreement WITH ALL SIGNATURES AND SEALS to the Center for International Mobility / Erasmus as soon as it is concluded!

LEARNING AGREEMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP

Before going on an internship, each student must conclude an LA that includes an activity plan, learning outcomes regarding the knowledge, skills and competencies that the student needs to acquire, mentoring, the connection between the internship and the study, and the results achieved that will be recognized upon completion of the internship.

The Learning Agreement describes the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved in the organization and implementation of professional practice..

The LA is signed by the student, the foreign company/institution/organization and the student's home higher education institution. Any subsequent changes/amendments are possible if there are objective reasons for this, and within one month of the student's arrival at the foreign company/institution/organization where he will do his professional internship. Any changes/amendments should be agreed upon between all three parties and entered into the LA as soon as possible.

The student is obliged to submit a copy of the Learning Agreement WITH ALL SIGNATURES AND STAMPS to the International Mobility / Erasmus Office.

Professional internships can be completed in companies, institutions, organizations and other entities that have the status of a legal entity.

The following types of organisations are not eligible as receiving organisations for student placements: EU institutions and other EU bodies, including specialised agencies (a comprehensive list of these can be found at https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/institutions-bodies_hr); organisations managing EU programmes such as national agencies for Erasmus+ (in order to avoid possible conflict of interest and/or double funding).

A new era of OLS and language assessments and courses has begun. The new system is called EU Academy and there are no language restrictions – students can learn multiple languages at once if they wish.

Language assessments are no longer mandatory, and you can use the system if you wish. The use of OLS is still encouraged given the many benefits and possibilities of the new platform. Likewise, the completion of a language assessment before the start of mobility for students is encouraged.

The new Erasmus+ App is a mobile application for Erasmus+ participants that will put the entire mobility experience at the fingertips of young people. The project aims to make mobility simple, accessible and within reach for every user, while promoting innovation and digitalisation in the long term.

Erasmus+ App features (currently under development):

  1. Structured information about existing Erasmus+ programs
  2. Top tips for living away from home (general, country and city specific)
  3. Interactive step-by-step checklists throughout the entire mobility period
  4. Integration with the Online Learning Agreement
  5. Integration with the Online Language Support Platform (OLS Platform)

The contracts are prepared by the Office for International Mobility / Erasmus. The contracts are signed by the dean of the Polytechnic and the student. The contracts are also signed by students who go on mobility without financial support (zero-grant students).

IMPORTANT:

  1. On January 1, 2019, a new Act on Amendments to the Income Tax Act came into force, according to which scholarships, awards for excellence of pupils and students paid from the budget and grants paid from the budget, funds and programs of the European Union and other international funds and programs regulated by special regulations and international agreements, for the purpose of education and professional development, will not be taken into account when determining the right to a personal deduction for students, i.e. the scholarship becomes non-taxable income! Consequently, all Erasmus+ grants paid to students after January 1, 2019 will no longer be included in the limit of 15,000 kuna and thus affect their dependent status. More information can be found here.

After the Competition, Baltazar Zaprešić Polytechnic will send letters of nomination to foreign institutions nominating the selected students. The foreign institution makes the final decision on accepting or rejecting the candidate..

The student is required to apply to the foreign institution. The student should study the website of the foreign institution and collect all the necessary documentation required of him, i.e. fill out all the necessary forms in agreement with the foreign institution. Some universities also have an online application. According to the principles of the Erasmus program, students should look for information for Erasmus students.

Students most often have to fill out and submit the following documents: application form, accommodation form, transcript of grades (sometimes it must be translated into a foreign language by a court interpreter), Learning Agreement, certificate of language proficiency.

After the foreign university receives the nomination letter from Baltazar Zaprešić Polytechnic and all necessary documentation from the student, it will issue the student with an invitation/acceptance letter. Once the student receives the acceptance letter, they can begin preparing for the exchange. If the acceptance letter does not arrive within a month and a half, the student must contact the contact person at the foreign university.

Students are required to have health insurance during their stay abroad.
If you have a regular status in compulsory health insurance in Croatia, the HZZO regional office according to your place of residence can issue you a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) free of charge upon your request. The EHIC is usually issued for a period of one year and is valid until the date stated on it. Croatian citizens can use immediate health care during a temporary stay in any of the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland on the basis of the EHIC.

Mandatory for students going on internships: A condition for receiving financial support for internships is the conclusion of mandatory insurance (accident insurance and workplace liability insurance), which is taken out by the student at his own expense. Liability and accident insurance covers damage caused by the participant or incurred by the participant during his stay abroad.

Some foreign institutions have insurance packages that are mandatory.

Croatian citizens can stay in the territory of EU member states for more than three months without a visa for the purpose of studying or participating in exchange programs, but in accordance with domestic legislation, they are obliged to regulate their stay on other grounds through the competent authorities of the member states.

The list of foreign diplomatic missions and consular offices in the Republic of Croatia is available on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

A special visa regime applies to Turkey.

Recommendations for participants for greener mobility within the Erasmus+ program, which contains useful information on what to do before, during and after mobility to make it as green as possible, can be found here.
